"Hoot" Compare and Contrast

Way To Go Good Job Sticker by Dirty Bandits for iOS & Android | GIPHYFirst, big compliments to

Lola
Drake
Jackson
Lewis
Gideon
Julian

for already finishing their "Hoot" essay. You made my entire week. If you need help with yours, have your parents message me.

Make a Venn diagram that looks like this:

In the book section, write things about characters and events that were different in the book than in the movie.

In the movie section, write about characters and events that were different in the movie than in the book.

In the middle section, write about what the book and movie have in common (how they are the same).

Write at least 4 things in each section, and then write "done" in the comments. Have your parent send a picture of it to me in Remind101.

Word Work

Per a request from Gideon, we are bringing back a joke/puzzle on word work days 😄

1. Complete word work (all days).
2. Comment "done" below AND answer to the joke/puzzle of the day.
3. I will ask you the answer to one or two questions. If you get it correct, you will get a GIF next word work posting. ⭐

Word work hints:

Monday: #3 write the definition and and underline what made you think that (context clues)

Tuesday: #1 smoosh "of the clock" together, use an apostrophe

Wednesday: #2 you do not need to capitalize clay, glaze or kiln. They are tools you use to make ceramics which is pottery.

Thursday: #2 declarative ("I'm here!") interrogative ("What are you doing?!) imperative ("You have to do your homework!") exclamatory ("Happy Birthday!")
#5 synonyms = same, antonyms = opposites, homophones = same sound, different spelling, different meanings

What Do You Wonder? Learning From Others

What Do You Wonder? Learning from Others

You have finished your science inquiry project, but the learning doesn't stop there. Take a look at your classmates projects below. In the comments, pick 5 people's projects and tell us a new fact you learned from each!

Here is an example of how your comment should look:

1. Stephanie's Project: I learned....
2. Lukey's Project: I learned....
3. Lauren's Project: I learned....
4. Sarah's Project:  I learned....
5. Richard's Project: I learned....

Writing Prompt #3 from Ms. Y: The “Hoot” ESSAY! (WOOHOO,"Hoot"!!!)

What is the main theme of “Hoot”?

Here are some examples:

I would suggest you pick either: courage, friendship, perseverance, or person vs. nature. Feel free to come up with your own.

For example, your three reasons for courage could be:
  1. Roy had courage when he stood up to Dana Matherson on the bus.
  2. Mullet Fingers had courage when he pulled out the stakes at the construction site to save the owls, even though he could’ve gotten in trouble with the law.
  3. Roy's dad had the courage to do what was right and investigate the construction site to save the owls.
(If you have ever gotten a 4 on an essay in my class, DO NOT use all of my reasons, come up with some of your own reasons.)

Here is the PDF of the book.

Remember:
  1. Fill out your  graphic organizer (Make a copy in google docs, then you can type directly onto it, OR you can print it out, OR you can do it on a separate piece of paper)
  2. Write your rough draft
  3. Have a conference (with your parent or call/Zoom a friend)
  4. Type your final draft on Google docs
  5. Fill out your rubric (you can print it out and circle it, OR make a copy in Google docs and highlight it, OR write what you would give yourself in a note at the bottom of your essay before you share it with me)
  6. Share the links with me in the comments and/or on Google
COMMENT your chosen theme below!

If you need help: Ms. Y and Ms. N are having office hours tomorrow, TUESDAY, from 6-7pm. I can do the graphic organizer with you if you get stuck. If that time doesn’t work for you, have your parents message me in Remind to set up another time.

*Because this is a big assignment, I suggest you work on it for about 20 minutes a day. DO NOT try to finish it all in one sitting, take some breaks!*

Our current top contributor (as of Friday) on our blog goes to EMMA!          Latest Shooting Star GIFs | Gfycat
Emma, you get to pick our intro song/ mini dance party song for this week's Zoom class meetings. More info to come.
