Per a request from Gideon, we are bringing back a joke/puzzle on word work days 😄

1. Complete word work (all days).

Word work hints:

Monday: #3 write the definition and and underline what made you think that (context clues)

Tuesday: #1 smoosh "of the clock" together, use an apostrophe 

Wednesday: #2 you do not need to capitalize clay, glaze or kiln. They are tools you use to make ceramics which is pottery.

Thursday: #2 declarative ("I'm here!") interrogative ("What are you doing?!) imperative ("You have to do your homework!") exclamatory ("Happy Birthday!")

Writing Prompt #3 from Ms. Y: The “Hoot” ESSAY! (WOOHOO,"Hoot"!!!)

What is the main theme of “Hoot”? 

Here are some examples:

I would suggest you pick either: courage, friendship, perseverance, or person vs. nature. Feel free to come up with your own.

For example, your three reasons for courage could be:

1. Roy had courage when he stood up to Dana Matherson on the bus.
2. Mullet Fingers had courage when he pulled out the stakes at the construction site to save the owls, even though he could’ve gotten in trouble with the law.
3. Roy's dad had the courage to do what was right and investigate the construction site to save the owls.

(If you have ever gotten a 4 on an essay in my class, DO NOT use all of my reasons, come up with some of your own reasons.)

My Answer: SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is the measure of how long sun screen will protect you against ultra-violet rays (UV rays). 

Four more facts I found interesting while I did my research was:

1. Interesting fact #1: Ultraviolet (UV) light is invisible to humans, because it has shorter wavelengths than the light we can see.
2. Interesting fact #2: No sunscreen blocks 100% of the UV rays.
3. Interesting fact #3: If it typically takes you 15 minutes to burn without sunscreen and you apply an SPF 10, it will take 10 times longer (2.5 hours) to burn in the sun.
4. Interesting fact #4: A higher SPF doesn't indicate superior sun protection—it indicates that you will remain protected in the sun for a longer amount of time. The lower the SPF, the more frequently you have to apply it.

Writing Prompt #2 from Ms. Y: Opinion Writing

What is the most amazing animal?

Write an opinion ACE paragraph about the animal you think is the most amazing,
and back it up with at least one source (no Wikipedia please).

Ms. Y’s ACE:

Giraffes are the most amazing animal because of their spots. No two giraffes have patterns that are the same, their spots help keep them cool, and keep them camouflaged. I know this because the text states, “Just like human fingerprints, no two giraffes have the same pattern. Researchers who spend long enough studying the same giraffes eventually find that they can recognise dozens or even hundreds of individuals from their patterns.” Additionally, “It’s thought that the pattern on a giraffe doesn’t just serve to camouflage the animal, but also helps with temperature regulation too. The coloured skin patches can act to dissipate heat around the body, as the temperature of the skin is slightly higher in darker regions, facilitating the dilation of vessels beneath the skin’s surface.” This means that not only do the spots on giraffes make them look interesting, they are unique to each animal and they function to help keep the giraffe hidden from predators and cool. To connect to this, giraffes also have a nasal (nose) cooling system to keep their brain cool. (I have loved giraffes since I’ve been in kindergarten)

Now that you have chosen a question that you wonder, we need to gather some websites that could help us find the answer! Here is what you need to do:

1. Make sure your question only asks 1 question. I see some of you have 2 questions in one. Here is my question after learning about the sun and how it affects us on Earth- (very simple):   What does SPF mean on sunscreen labels?
2.  Gather some websites that may be able to help you find your answer. Quick Tip: If you type your actual question in Google, it may be too specific to actually help find your answer. Try Googleing key words from your question instead of typing the whole thing. For instance, here is what I Googled:

• The history behind sunscreen?
• What does SPF mean?
• How was SPF created?

I am basically answering my question in 4 different ways to find more information.
